We were expecting your diligence to render us a thoroughly detailed account of the silver belonging to the churches and whatever other property you found, so that from your report we might have been able to deliberate more precisely about what ought to be done. But your report did not inform us as it should have. Therefore, let it be your care to deposit the silver of the churches that the clergy and people still hold — wherever you judge best — in the treasury of the church, with all due diligence and caution, and to obtain a receipt for the deposit. As for the silver of those churches that, on account of our sins, have been abandoned by their clergy and people, bring it here with you. If you discover that three or four clergy from those churches have remained, make a report of who each one is, his circumstances, and where he lives, and bring it to us, so that, if we judge it necessary, we may determine what each should receive annually. As for perishable goods that might deteriorate with age, bring those with you likewise, so that whatever seems useful may be arranged from them. Then, with the Lord's protection, when you have found a ship ready to sail, return to us.
