Ennodius of Pavia → Eugenetes, vir illustris
Tradução moderna em inglês
May a favorable omen, arriving to strengthen your auspices, fortify the beginnings of your hoary dignity with divine counsels. May heavenly favor through you govern the lord of liberty, so that from the fountain of your breast there may flow to the ears of the prince what the heavenly rain has poured into you. Behold, the vows I owed to your beginnings I have declared, though in words compressed to narrow bounds. Remember the love and the covenant you promised, so that without loss from change the quaestorship may discharge the debt owed to me. Maintain toward me the disposition of your predecessor: let the promise of your dignity not be broken by a change of the persons of my lord. Be well, according to the desire of your suppliant, and amid the great proclamation of benefits receive these sparing words. For such is the custom of the fortunate and the nature of the better sort, that the riches of their tongue are surpassed by their deeds and what they bestow.
