Resumo

My wishes have been fulfilled through your efforts, and I write to acknowledge both the result and the agent.

Tradução moderna em inglês

The occasion that serves as the bearer of my writing to you obeys my desire. For conversation soothes in place of presence and promises to itself through the sending of pages what it displays, because the most refined men, just as they consider it a reproach to their virtues that anyone has surpassed them in testimony of diligence, so too they count it a disgrace to neglect examples. This communion has lived among holy men: that through the foresight of the inner person, earthly separation should do no harm. It is fitting, my lord, that you follow both my desire and my example. Therefore, offering greetings in the first place, I beg that you be mindful of me, so that what is withdrawn from me through my own negligence may be conferred by the support of divine grace through you. I declare without lying that on the third night after my departure, my holy lady Cynegia, unwelcome to me, appeared at the very beginning of the light, and I was greatly blamed by her for the haste of my journey. She complained, not with gentle words, about why her tomb had not been honored even with verses. These things indeed I did not receive as an image of prophetic truth, nor did I perhaps devote the sweat of my labor to nocturnal illusions. But because those who love are easily persuaded, she who was admonishing did not labor to exact a debt that was owed. The reverence due to the lady is preserved. The verses which I have sent — I adjure you by the Day of Judgment to have them inscribed immediately on the wall above, at the feet. Know that this will also be pleasing to your son: for he wishes the merits of that lady to be celebrated on the lips of many, but in the form in which you find them here. Greet my lady Stephania and my lady Sabiana, and also my lady Fadilla on my behalf. If they have been inscribed, write back at once. Deign to tell the lord pope to arrange something concerning my case through the holy deacon Dioscorus. I have written as much as I could given the haste of the courier. Greet my lord and brother Hormisda warmly on my behalf, and tell him to send that key.
