Pope Pelagius I → destinatário desconhecido
Tradução moderna em inglês
Pope Pelagius I to Decoratus, patrician.
We instruct you to require the taking of an oath in the matter at issue before you. Since the opposing party was absent when the documents were presented, the laws do not accept such records as fully valid; and regarding the claim of Placidus from the previous year, since the fault is not established in his case, the question cannot be determined under civil law without further hearing. We ask you to proceed in accordance with legal procedure, ensuring that oaths are sworn on the holy Gospels, so that the truth of the matter may be established and justice properly administered.
